BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. has acquired Alesta Therapeutics, a privately held biotech firm based in Leiden, Netherlands, for an undisclosed amount. The transaction brings Alesta’s early-stage oncology pipeline under BioMarin’s control, adding a novel approach to its existing portfolio of rare disease therapies.

Alesta focuses on developing first-in-class small molecules that target GCN2, a kinase involved in cellular stress responses and amino acid sensing. The company has advanced a clinical candidate through an extensive pre-GLP toxicology and CMC package, positioning it for potential entry into human trials. BioMarin, known for its work in enzyme replacement therapies and genetic disorders, is expanding beyond its core rare disease focus into oncology, where GCN2 inhibition holds promise for treating tumors with metabolic vulnerabilities.

The acquisition is strategic for BioMarin because it provides a differentiated asset in a high-unmet-need area without requiring early-stage discovery work. Alesta’s chemistry expertise and preclinical data reduce the risk typically associated with novel targets, allowing BioMarin to accelerate development timelines. For Alesta, the deal offers access to BioMarin’s global regulatory and manufacturing infrastructure, which is critical for advancing a small-molecule program through later-stage trials.

The combined entity will integrate Alesta’s Leiden-based team into BioMarin’s research operations, though specific integration plans have not been disclosed. The deal does not include any upfront milestone payments or contingent value rights, as the terms were kept private. BioMarin’s existing cash reserves are expected to cover the acquisition cost, with no impact on its current guidance.

With the acquisition complete, BioMarin now holds full ownership of the GCN2 program, including all related intellectual property and clinical assets. The company is expected to file an investigational new drug application within the next 18 months, subject to regulatory review. This move positions BioMarin to enter the oncology space with a first-in-class candidate, while Alesta’s scientific foundation becomes part of a larger, well-resourced development engine.
