GTCR, a private equity firm, has acquired Tactacam, a provider of cellular-connected cameras for the outdoor and security markets. The acquisition was made from Bertram Capital and Tactacam’s founders. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Tactacam, founded in 2013 and headquartered in Billings, Montana, offers cellular-connected trail and security cameras to more than 1 million subscribers across the United States. The company entered the cellular trail camera market in 2020 with its Reveal product line, which provides users with access to wildlife images via a mobile app. In 2024, Tactacam expanded into the security market with the launch of Defend, a line of cellular-connected cameras designed for residential and commercial property monitoring in areas beyond traditional Wi-Fi range.
Tactacam CEO and Co-Founder Jeff Peel will continue to lead the company and retain significant ownership alongside Co-Founder Ben Thorud. GTCR plans to collaborate with Peel and Tactacam’s management team on investments in product development and expanded distribution.
According to GTCR Managing Director and Head of Business & Consumer Services David Donnini, Tactacam’s combination of connected cameras, software, and subscription services aligns with the firm’s experience in technology-enabled consumer and commercial subscription businesses. GTCR Managing Director Tom Ehrhart noted Tactacam’s expansion into property monitoring with Defend as an opportunity for further investment in product development and distribution, alongside continued investment in Reveal.
GTCR’s current portfolio includes commercial security systems integrator Everon and SimpliSafe, a provider of residential and small-business security systems. The Chicago-based private equity firm, founded in 1980, manages $45 billion in equity capital.
