AllShield | BarrierSheet® fire barrier for PV roofs

Commercial rooftop PV is not only an energy project. Its feasibility is often decided by the roof underneath it. Many existing commercial roofs contain combustible insulation or ageing waterproofing membranes. Once PV is added, the question is therefore not only how to reduce the probability of electrical ignition, but also what happens if ignition still occurs. Can the roof assembly limit the consequences or can the roof itself become additional fuel? This is where AllShield BarrierSheet comes in. BarrierSheet is a lightweight, mineral and A1 non-combustible fire barrier coverboard installed underneath a new waterproofing membrane. At approximately 3 kg/m², it was developed specifically for commercial flat roofs where weight, fire behaviour and practical refurbishment all matter. The system has been tested in realistic roof-PV configurations and is FM Approved under FM 4470 and FM 4478 in an approved RoofNav assembly. Fire testing has shown that BarrierSheet can help prevent direct flame penetration into deeper roof layers and limit the involvement of combustible materials below the waterproofing. That makes it particularly relevant when an existing roof is being refurbished before PV is installed. Instead of looking at the PV system in isolation, the complete roof assembly should be assessed first: structural capacity, waterproofing, remaining service life, insulation, fire behaviour, fixing method and insurability. The real question should therefore not simply be whether solar panels can be installed on a roof. It should be whether that roof is suitable to carry a PV system safely for the next 20 to 30 years.
